Many of those who graduated prior to the 90's will remember hanging out on Lancaster Boulevard each Friday and Saturday night. I can recall many students from AV, Palmdale, and Quartz Hill cruising up and down the Boulevard, meeting for dinner, drinking, trash-talking, and fighting. Some of my friends had eye-catching vehicles which were fun to ride in. Jeff Meece from the class of '85 at Quartz Hill had his large tan GMC truck. David Koch from the class of '87 at Quartz Hill had his white Ford Mustang. And Jason Robbins from the class of '88 at AV had his blue Chevy Nova. Many others had vehicles to envy and raced them on or around the Boulevard area. I'd say it was always a place of concern for the L.A. County Sheriffs who had to patrol the Boulevard on weekends and keep tabs on us.

Shannon Vaughn had the hottest legs on campus. And she put them to good use - the girl is still running in marathons and triathalons to this day! (Posted 9-15-09)

Bobby Loughridge was our principal in 1987. He was always kind and down to Earth. If it wasn't for him, I would not have been able to graduate on time. In 10th grade, I transferred from Simi Valley High School to Quartz Hill. The curriculum requirements were slightly higher at Quartz Hill in history subjects. I did not know that and the administration department did not bother to inform me until the LAST DAY OF SENIOR YEAR! About six hours prior to the graduation ceremonies, my counselor was telling me that I was short one history class from my 9th grade year and therefore unable to graduate! I walked directly into Mr. Loughridge's office and told him what happened. He quickly pulled my file and reviewed my transcripts. Because I had never been in any trouble and had good grades, he signed a waiver which gave me credit for the class I missed and thus was able to graduate that evening. He was very kind to go out of his way. I also remember that he was always dressed sharp and drove a unique car.

I remember that AV used to routinely beat us at football each year. It got to be quite frustrating. Then, in our senior year, we had the upper hand for most of the game but allowed AV to pull off a miracle late in the game to defeat us once again. Sigh.

Tony Scurto was my favorite QHHS teacher. He made learning American History fun and interactive. He understood his students and was very considerate. I will never forget standing at his side on the morning of Tuesday, January the 28th of 1986, as both of us stared in disbelief at the memo he had just been handed and was expected to read to our class: Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff. I remember that he commented about how the loss of the teacher on board, Christa McAuliffe, must have been having a devastating effect on her students. It was that kind of consideration that helped him connect with his own students. He handled that tough moment with great poise. He always treated our class with much respect.
